Should I Crate Train My Dachshund?

Although not all dachshunds actually need to be crate trained, proper crate training can have many benefits for any dachshund or owner.

Pharaoh Hounds have an unusual feature. They are the only breed of dogs that "blushes". They do this when they are excited or happy. When they "blush" their ears, nose and eyes will become pink.

Many dachshunds have severe separation anxiety because dachshunds are pack animals. As a result, when humans leave a dachshund home alone, sometimes the dachshund will chew or destroy furniture and other objects. Crating a dachshund for a few hours when it is home alone will help to reduce anxiety-related destruction.

The first living being to travel in space was a small mixed breed dog named Laika, who gave her life orbiting the earth in the Russian Sputnik in 1957. John F. Kennedy's terrier, Charlie, sired 4 puppies with Laika's daughter, Pushinka.

Another benefite of crate trianing is that wild dachshunds live in dens. These dens provide protection from the weather, comfort and security. Crate training, when done properly, can give a domestic dachshund the same sense of security.

While many people think of Boxers as aggressive, they are actually great with children. They were bred to be hunters, yes, but they were bred to corner prey, not kill it. As a result, they are protective, yet patient.

Another good use for crate training is transportation. If your dachshund is trained to go into its crate on command then it can be taken on a trip or to the vet with ease.

The largest and the smallest dogs to live in the White House were both there during the tenure of president James Buchanan. The president had a Newfoundland named Lara. His niece, Harriet Lane, had a tiny toy terrier named Punch.

When you first begin crate training a dachshund, it's important not to lock the dachshund in the crate or use the crate as a punishment in any way. The object is to get the dachshund to want to go into his crate when he needs to. It should feel comforting, like a human's bedroom. If you are going to be home with your dachshund the crate should be left open so that the dachshund has free access to his crate. This will allow him to get used to the crate. Over time he will actually enjoy spending time in his crate, even when he doesn't have to.

Chinese Crested dogs are often considered to be so ugly that they are cute. They often win ugly dog contests. They are odd looking, mostly hairless dogs. They are also the only breed of dog that is capable of getting acne.

The only situation where crate training should not be used is if nobody is going to be available to let the dachshund out of the crate for a certain amount of time. Dachshunds like to keep their beds clean, so they do not like to go to the bathroom anywhere near their beds. A smaller puppy generally has to go every two or three hours. An older dachshund can generally wait for up to five or six hours. Therefore, a crate should never be used for long-term confinement.

The Schipperke, or "little captain", is generally thought of as being solid black in the USA. However, they do actually come in other colors. The reason they are commonly thought to only be black, is that the black variety is the only type currently recognized by the AKC.
