Can a Good Dachshund be Found in DOG Shelters?
Many people feel like shelter dachshunds are not as good as other DOGS. They feel that shelter dachshunds are often there because they are sick or vicious or otherwise undesirable. The truth is, if you know what to look for, yes, a good dachshund can definitely be found at a DOG shelter. ![]()
The official name of the dogs we call pitbulls is the American staffordshire terrier. Pitbulls have been the preferred pet of many famous people including Fred Astaire, Vin Diesel, Alicia Silverstone, Michael J. Fox, and James Caan. There are actually quite a few advantages to adopting most shelter DOGS. First, many shelter DOGS are already housebroken. Second, unlike puppies, older shelter DOGS are already up to date on all of their shots and spayed or neutered. Third, many shelter DOGS already know a few basic commands, which makes them generally easier to train. ![]()
Pharaoh Hounds have an unusual feature. They are the only breed of dogs that "blushes". They do this when they are excited or happy. When they "blush" their ears, nose and eyes will become pink.
It's important to note that every shelter DOG is not suited for every family. Sometimes shelter employees do not know the full history of the dachshund. A dachshund that has been abused may react in odd ways to things that you, as the new owner, may not be aware of. There are some easy ways to avoid that and be sure that the dachshund you get is right for your family. ![]()
The largest breed of dog that is recognized by the American Kennel Club is the Irish Wolfhound, which stands thirty to 30 to 35 inches at the top of the shoulders and weighs 105 to 125 pounds.
First, examine the shelter itself. Make sure that you choose to adopt from a shelter where the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. If the staff is unfriendly or the facility is unclean, choose another shelter. ![]()
Many people will swear that they own a golden labrador. The problem is that golden labradors do not exist! There is no purebred dog called a golden lab. The dog is probably either a golden retriever or a labrador retriever.
Also, if possible, get the complete history of the dachshund. Ask where it came from and how it got there. The history of the dachshund will tell you a lot about its personality. ![]()
Paul McCartney, of Beatles fame, was very fond of his shetland sheepdog. In fact, at the end of the song "A Day in the Life" Mr. McCartney inserted an ultrasonic whistle, audible only to dogs, for his shetland sheepdog.
Whether you can get the dachshund's history or not, it's good to just observe all of the DOGS at the shelter. Visit the shelter a couple of times with the whole family. Observe how the DOGS react to each family member. That will be a good indication of things to come. ![]()
The official record for the heaviest dog was set way back in 1989. The dog in question was an English mastiff named Zorba. At the time, he weighed 343 pounds. He was 8 years old when he was weighed.

Part of the reason that basset hounds have such a unique look is that the British purposely bred basset hounds to have short legs, so that hunters could keep up with them. Unfortunate this has caused the breed to be prone to leg/joint problems. |
