Common Dachshund Allergies

It's bad enough when you or your child suffers from seasonal allergies, but at least you can discuss signs and symptoms with them and find out what's bothering them most; the runny nose, the watery eyes or the itching. However, talking to your dachshund about his or her allergies isn't an option. Yes, common DOG allergies can affect your beloved pooch as well, but you have to be the one to identify them before you can begin treatment to help relieve symptoms.

St. bernards have a well-deserved reputation as rescue dogs. In fact, the most successful mountain rescue dog ever was a st. bernard. His name was Barry. He lived during the early 1800's, during which time he saved 40 lives.

The most common dachshund allergies are caused by dermatitis, flea allergies, as well as allergies caused by the same pollens, grasses and weeds that give you fits. Dachshunds can also be allergic to some foods as well as medications and bacteria. Atopic dermatitis affects millions of DOGS throughout the United States, and is one of the most common dachshund allergies that veterinarians treat on a yearly basis. This dachshund variety of the dermatitis that also afflicts people is caused by an increased sensitivity in the dachshund's immune system that makes your dachshund especially vulnerable to dust mites and different kinds of molds.

The silky terrier originated about 100 years ago in Australia. Their major ancestors were the Australian terrier and the Yorkshire terrier. They were bred to be family companions, watchdogs, and to hunt rodents and snakes.

Signs that your dachshund may be suffering from atopic dermatitis are excessive grooming, and most especially, constant licking around the paws, abdomen and hindquarters. Check ears, which may be hot and red. Many times, dachshunds show reddened area in the armpits, groin and between paws, so check your dachshund all over.

Labrador retrievers, as their name indicates, were bred to retrieve things. However, most people think of them today as retrieving sticks, or other similar objects. In reality, they were originally bred to help fishermen by retrieving fishing nets!

Fleas cause a lot of grief to dachshunds, and are the cause of additional, common dachshund allergies such as flea allergy dermatitis. This condition is very similar to atopic dermatitis, but if you look closely, you should be able to see signs of fleas on your dachshund. Keep in mind that it is not the flea itself that causes the allergy in your dachshund, but its saliva. If you can't tell which allergy your dachshund may be suffering, visit the vet, who will be able to perform a simple skin allergy test to determine if it's the flea saliva that is driving your dachshund crazy.

People are always taking their Yorkshire terriers to the groomer. Why? Well, Yorkshire terriers can grow hair up to 2 feet in length! Considering that they are nowhere near two feet tall, this makes regular grooming a must!

If your vet has ruled out atopic and flea allergy dermatitis, other common dachshund allergies can be the result of pollens found in nearly every back yard in America: grass, trees and weeds. While most DOG breeds aren't affected by such, many are, including Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Poodles and German Shepherds, just to name a few. Biting, scratching and gnawing at paws are signs of these common dachshund allergies, which may also cause ear infections.

The springer spaniel breed is well-known for having very high energy levels. In fact, the "spring" in "springer spaniel" referred to this dog's ability to spring out at, or startle game. They are excellent hunting dogs.

Contact allergies, foods, and bacteria in and around your home cause other dachshund allergies. On some occasions, your dachshund's flea collar may be the culprit of his allergy symptoms, as can the shampoo you use to bathe him. When dealing with the symptoms of dachshund allergies, try to rule out possible suspects one by one. Keep bedding clean, use proper shampoos to bathe your dachshund, and use some sort of flea and tick protection year round. Your dachshund can't tell you what's bothering him, so it's up to you to help provide relief for his allergy symptoms.

Dandie Dinmont is a fictional character in Sir Walter Scott's "Guy Mannering", published in 1814. The main character had mustard and pepper terriers. Although Dandie Dinmont dogs were in existence for many years previously, it is this character that gave the breed their name.

Pekingese dogs are quite small. This worked out well for their ancient masters, who were ancient Chinese royalty. These royal masters used to carry the peke dogs along in the sleeves of their royal robes.
