Do Dachshunds Get Along With Cats?
Obviously, some dachshunds and cats can and do get along, as there are many households where both dachshunds and cats coexist peacefully. However, all animals are individuals and have individual responses, so introducing a specific cat to a specific dachshund can sometimes be a challenge. ![]()
Basset hounds are fabulous at hunting and they make wonderful companion dogs. However, even with those great qualities, basset hounds are horrible swimmers! Their legs are simply too small to keep their heavy, long bodies afloat properly.
The easiest way to help ensure that your dachshund and cat will get along is for you to adopt a dachshund and a cat that have already been living with the opposite species at some point. ![]()
The basenji could really be considered more like a cat than a dog. Not only is it the only breed of dog that does not bark, but is also a meticulous cleaner. Unlike other dogs, the basenji actually licks itself clean, just like a cat!
Its also important to remember that many species of DOGS have a very strong instinct to hunt prey. In such cases, it will probably take more time to get your DOG and cat to be friends, rather than hunter and hunted, but it is usually possible if you have the patience. ![]()
The Lowchen, a small, somewhat rare breed of dog, is native to France. It's called "petit chien lion" or, "little lion dog". This is due to its fur growth, as it resembles the mane of a lion. One way to get a dachshund and cat used to each other is to put one in a crate, usually the cat, and bring it into the room where the other is present. Then you can reward both animals for being calm in each others presence and you will not be dealing with the potential for a fight. ![]()
French poodles were originally used as hunting dogs, but, because their thick coats proved a problem in the bush and water, their owners started clipping them. They left hair on the ankles to protect against rheumatism, which is why poodles sometimes appear to have unusual haircuts.
Its also important not to punish your pets. If you punish one pet for going after the other then that generally just makes the pet more careful about not letting you catch them, it doesnt actually stop the behavior. ![]()
The Broholmer is a breed that is recognized only in Denmark. It was thought extinct in the 1960's but, in December of 1974, a purebred Broholmer popped up in Finland. This dog was a male, and the owners hoped to find a female for him to mate with, but it never happened. While still recognized as a breed, an example has yet to appear again.
By having some patience, knowing the traits of the individual pet and rewarding the good behavior, while ignoring the bad, most dachshunds and cats are capable of, if not loving each other, at least tolerating each other.

German Shepherds have incredibly sensitive noses. They have over 225 million cell receptors in their noses, making them ideal for police work, such as bomb and drug sniffing, finding missing children and tracking criminals.
