Do Dachshunds Like to Wear Clothes?
Most people who dress up their dachshunds do so for one of two reasons. The first reason is because the people find it funny. Let's face it, a dachshund wearing clothes is cute. It's a great topic for conversation. It's fun at holidays and parties. However, it's not necessarily as enjoyable for the dachshund. Dachshunds are individuals, just like human beings. Some dachshunds may tolerate dressing up better than other dachshunds do, especially if there is food or some reward involved, but that does not necessarily mean that they like it. ![]()
The smallest breed of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club is the Chihuahua, which stands six to nine inches at the top of the shoulders and generally weighs two to six pounds. Their size makes them excellent travel companions.
The second reason people dress up their pets is for protection from the cold. This reason is completely valid for certain breeds. For instance, breeds such as the chihuahua originated in warmer climates. Therefore, if you own a DOG that is native to a warmer climate and you live in a colder climate they have trouble keeping warm in such weather. In these cases sometimes a DOG sweater is essential. ![]()
While adult dalmations are covered in cute black spots, dalmation puppies are actually born solid white. Their spots don't show up until they are at least a week old. Sometimes not until they are a month old.
It is very important, no matter what the reason for dressing up the dachshund, to supervise the dachshund if it is dressed up. Dachshunds shouldn't be dressed up in anything that they could easily get tangled in or chew up and choke on. If the dachshund does not take well to being dressed up it could easily start running around trying to escape and get caught on doors or other objects. ![]()
The greyhound is the fastest breed of dog. It is capable of running at speeds of around 45 miles per hour. Greyhounds are excellent for hunting and racing, but they are notorious for laziness, often preferring to cuddle on a couch, rather than run. This makes them an ideal house pet.
The bottom line is that if the dachshund needs clothes to go outside in the cold or seems to tolerate them ok at holidays or special occasions then there's no harm done. However, if the dachshund doesn't need clothes and doesn't seem to like them then they shouldn't be forced into it. Dachshunds, like people, don't usually like to be forced to do something for someone else's amusement. ![]()
The Schipperke, or "little captain", is generally thought of as being solid black in the USA. However, they do actually come in other colors. The reason they are commonly thought to only be black, is that the black variety is the only type currently recognized by the AKC. ![]()
The Dalmatian is the only breed of dog that gets gout. Gout is an arthritic condition that causes inflammation of the joints. Gout is usually a human condition, but, for some reason, our dalmation friends get it too. This is commonly thought to be due to inbreeding. ![]()
Part of the reason that basset hounds have such a unique look is that the British purposely bred basset hounds to have short legs, so that hunters could keep up with them. Unfortunate this has caused the breed to be prone to leg/joint problems. ![]()
A st. bernard became a mother in 1975. While that wasn't unusual by itself, the unusual thing was that she had twenty-three puppies! She now shares this record with two other dogs, one of which originally set it in 1944.
