Healthy Basics of Dachshund Care

- Unless specifically labeled safe for use, never apply insect repellent products or sunscreen onto your canine. The ingestion of insecticides, sunscreen products and other pest controls may result in excessive thirstiness; diarrhea, drooling, and lethargy are symptomatic of chemical ingestion. Avoid the overusing insect repellents that contain the chemical DEET because it can lead to neurological disorders.



The springer spaniel breed is well-known for having very high energy levels. In fact, the "spring" in "springer spaniel" referred to this dog's ability to spring out at, or startle game. They are excellent hunting dogs.


- When entertaining outdoors, be aware of keeping matches, charcoal, citronella candles, lighter fluid, and other potentially poisonous items out of your dachshunds' reach.



Beagles are known to be extremely social and cheerful dogs. They are expected to be so friendly that, even in dog shows, the judges expect them to be happy. They have points removed in the judging if they look to be unhappy.

The Broholmer is a breed that is recognized only in Denmark. It was thought extinct in the 1960's but, in December of 1974, a purebred Broholmer popped up in Finland. This dog was a male, and the owners hoped to find a female for him to mate with, but it never happened. While still recognized as a breed, an example has yet to appear again.


- Outdoor caution is advised in older, overweight or dachshunds sensitive to heat.. Snub-nosed DOGS (brachycephalic) such as: pugs, bulldogs, shih tzus Boston terriers, Lhasa apsos are prone to heat induced complications. Canines diagnosed with heart and lung diseases should be housed in a the comfort of an air-conditioned room (as much as possible).



Labrador retrievers, as their name indicates, were bred to retrieve things. However, most people think of them today as retrieving sticks, or other similar objects. In reality, they were originally bred to help fishermen by retrieving fishing nets!


- For a day at the beach, find a shaded spot where your dachshund has access to an ample supply of fresh water.

- Late spring and early summer are the best times to schedule your dachshund's visit to the veterinarian. Canines should be tested for heartworms specifically for dachshunds who are not taking a year-round preventive medication.
