Is it Safe for a Dachshund to Sniff Another Dachshund's Poop?
Needless to say, many dachshund owners may not be particularly fond of discussing the subject of their dachshund sniffing another dachshund's poop, but concerns over health often force the topic into the open. Sure, it's not the most pleasant aspect of dachshund ownership, but it happens to involve every dachshund owner, whether they admit it in public or not! ![]()
The Schipperke, or "little captain", is generally thought of as being solid black in the USA. However, they do actually come in other colors. The reason they are commonly thought to only be black, is that the black variety is the only type currently recognized by the AKC.
While merely sniffing another dachshund's poop may not be inherently dangerous to your dachshund, eating another dachshund's poop, called coprophagia, is another matter entirely. While the idea is repugnant to humans, this behavior in dachshunds is rather common. After all, a dachshund has increased senses, and through the smelling of another dachshund's poop, may be able to identify what that dachshund has eaten, when, and whether or not it may taste good. ![]()
In the latter part of the 18th century, Holland was split between the partisans of the Prince of Orange and the patriots, and the patriots were led by Kees de Gyselaer, who owned a dog named Kees. Kees gave the Keeshond breed its name and became the symbol of the Patriots.
Dogs mark their territory, so when they come across another dachshund's pile of poop, it's perfectly natural for them to identify what the substance is. If they are hungry, and you are not feeding your dachshund adequately, they may even take a taste or two. If a dachshund's body craves for nutrients that the diet you are feeding him does not address, the problem may grow worse. ![]()
There is a grammar debate about the Borzoi (Russian Wolfhound). The plural, "Borzois", may be found in dictionaries. However, the Borzoi Club of America asserts that "Borzoi" is the preferred form for both singular and plural.
The best thing for dachshund owners to do to prevent such situations is to pick up after their dachshunds, both at home and when they take them out for a walk. Dachshunds will sniff anything, just to figure out what it is, so why is another dachshund's poop any different? Dachshund owners should not be alarmed at this type of territorial behavior, but they can take measures to avoid the next step in the process, which may be your dachshund's ingesting the fecal matter. ![]()
In the late 1800's, rough collies were known as Scottish Sheepdogs. The name was eventually changed to rough collie. This is probably due to the fact that both rough and bearded collies were developed in Scotland to help herd sheep.
Make sure your dachshund is healthy, fed a well-balanced, nutritional diet and is kept amused and entertained. Bored or anxious dachshunds are more likely to be attracted to sniffing, and eating, another dachshund's poop, than one who is mentally and physically stimulated and active. When walking your dachshund, make sure you distract him or her when you notice a pile of poop just waiting for inspection. Praise your dachshund when he responds appropriately to your commands of 'no', or 'leave it' or other sounds of warning. Never punish your dachshund for being inquisitive, as curiosity is as natural to them as it is to humans. ![]() The American Kennel Club recognizes more than 150 breeds? Segmented into seven different breed types, all breed possess unique temperaments, physical characteristics as well as a rich background in history.
If your dachshund continuously smells other dachshund's poop, try changing your walking route to a cleaner path. If such a consideration isn't possible, ask your vet for some spray that you might carry with you that will discourage your dachshund from smelling or eating any poop you find on your walks. Hot sauce is also good at keeping dachshunds from eating poop, though they may get away with it the first time. The second time, however, the taste of the sauce may be repugnant enough for them to avoid further sniffing. ![]()
Many toy fox terriers used to be used commonly in circus shows by clowns. They are said to make great companions for owners with a good sense of humor. They seem to anticipate their master's every thought and mood.
The best thing a dachshund owner can do is to feed dachshunds adequate nutrients in their diet. Clean up after your dachshund and give them plenty of stimulation and exercise. After all, no one wants to talk about his or her dachshund smelling another dachshund's poop!
