Tips for Keeping Your Dachshund Healthy

Keeping your dachshund healthy is very important. Good dachshunds are more than just pets, they are members of the family. Like people, there are a lot of varying factors that have at least some part in determining the overall health of a dachshund. The following article has several tips that will help you keep man's best friend in tip top shape.

A st. bernard became a mother in 1975. While that wasn't unusual by itself, the unusual thing was that she had twenty-three puppies! She now shares this record with two other dogs, one of which originally set it in 1944.

Nutrition: Diet is important for health of any animal, dachshunds included. This doesn't just mean nutritious food, but also food that your dachshund can digest easily. When looking for DOG food, try to find canned food free of preservatives. This will make it easier to digest. Exercise: Regular exercise is always important, especially for dachshunds. This helps strengthen muscles, keeps weight down, and helps dachshunds burn off energy. While there are a few breeds that are couch potatoes, the far majority of dachshunds need exercise, and even the couch potatoes need to still get out every so often.

The name Pug is believed to have derived from this dog's resemblance to the pug monkey. That also fits the breed in other ways. Pugs tend to be curious and mischievous. They always seem to have a look of mischief and fun on their face, just like a monkey.

Know Your DOGS Specific Needs: Different DOG breeds have different needs, from space to level of exercise. Some need constant attention, some moderate. Some DOGS tend to be prone towards certain illnesses, so knowing your dachshunds specific needs and having him or her checked by a vet should help ensure a long and healthy life. Mental Exercises: Most dachshunds are very active and love to learn. Giving them toys and teaching them tricks will not only keep them sharp, but keep them from letting curiosity get them into trouble. Since even trained dachshunds may be curious and like to explore, make sure there is nothing harmful out where they can get into it.

The dachshund's name comes from it's earliest use. The dachshund was originally a badger hunter. In German, Dachs means "badger," Hund is "hound". This explains the breed's curious and inquisitive nature, which has survived to this day.

Vaccinations: Aside from regular visits to the vet, all your dachshunds should be kept vaccinated. Not every vaccination is just given as a puppy, even older dachshunds may need various vaccines at different times. Keep up on these tips and your dachshund will be a healthy and happy companion for years to come.

The Dalmatian is the only breed of dog that gets gout. Gout is an arthritic condition that causes inflammation of the joints. Gout is usually a human condition, but, for some reason, our dalmation friends get it too. This is commonly thought to be due to inbreeding.
